Sailing Trimarans · Performance Cruising: YachtCodex lists 8 models, 11.6–19.2 m long. The builders with the most are Rapido Trimarans (5) and Dragonfly Trimarans (2). The largest in production is the Rapido 63 (19.2 m); the shallowest draft is the Dragonfly 36's (0.67 m).
Sailing Trimarans
A main hull with a float either side: most of the weight in the middle, most of the stability at the ends of the beams. A trimaran carries its accommodation in one hull rather than two, which puts the living space on one level and keeps the crew together, and it is generally the quickest of the three forms for a given length. It is also the rarest in production, which is why this is the shortest list on the site.
Performance Cruising
Cruising yachts that are quick, rather than racers with berths in them. A boat is listed here when it is a sailing yacht, not a pure racer, has at least two cabins, and either carries the performance-cruiser type or shows a sail-area-to-displacement ratio of 25 or more. The textbook bands -- 16 for a cruiser, 16 to 20 for a cruiser-racer, above 20 for a performance boat -- are measured on the 100% foretriangle; this catalogue measures upwind area including the genoa, and on the published fleet cruisers sit at a median of 21 and performance cruisers at 31, so the line is drawn at 25.
