What this builder is

Azimut is a major Italian motor yacht builder, part of the Azimut|Benetti Group, producing a broad range of yachts from 42-foot sport cruisers up to 44-metre flagship superyachts across several distinct series. It sits in the upper-premium segment of production motor yachts, competing with builders like Ferretti, Sunseeker and Princess, and is known for stylish Italian design and a wide, frequently refreshed model range.

Who sails them

Azimut buyers are typically experienced powerboaters and affluent private owners who use their yachts for Mediterranean and international coastal cruising, weekend and family getaways, and extended vacations, often with a professional crew on larger Grande and Trideck models. Boats range from sporty day/weekend cruisers (Verve, Atlantis) suited to smaller groups to larger flybridge and long-range explorer yachts (Fly, Magellano, Grande) used for multi-week cruising and sometimes chartered through Azimut's Charter Club.

Signature models

The Grande series, including the new Grande 44M flagship, represents Azimut's largest and most luxurious yachts, while the Seadeck series (6, 7, 9) is a newer, design-forward line emphasizing indoor-outdoor living. The Magellano series is notable for its long-range, displacement-style hull aimed at serious cruisers, and the Atlantis and Verve series serve as more compact, sportier entry points into the brand.

Strengths

Azimut is widely credited with distinctive Italian styling, innovative deck layouts (such as the Seadeck's open-air living concept), and one of the broadest model ranges in the motor yacht industry, backed by an extensive global dealer network.

Considerations

As a large production builder within the Azimut|Benetti Group, Azimut yachts are built in volume across many series, so buyers weigh some standardization and options-driven customization against the fully bespoke experience of true custom yards, and pricing sits at a premium but below full-custom megayacht builders.

History

Paolo Vitelli began chartering sailing yachts in 1969, the company was established in 1973, and in 1975 Azimut moved from distribution to creation with the AZ 43' Bali, built with Amerglass to a design by Bernard Olesinski and Terry Disdale -- one of the largest fibreglass yachts of its time and the first to carry the name. John Bennett's AZ 32' Targa of 1977, with its raised helm and opening sunroof, was an international success; Azimut acquired the Benetti shipyard in 1985, and in 1988 the Pininfarina-designed Atlantic Challenger, with four CRM engines of 7,400 hp in all, attempted the Blue Riband transatlantic record under Cesare Fiorio. Pininfarina reimagined the Azimut 65 in 1991 ('not available in red'), the 68 Plus of 1999 brought curvilinear glazing to yachting, the 50 of 2002 looked ahead in form and function, the 68S of 2003 was the first 'open yacht' on the sport-yacht market with its square hull windows, and the Magellano 74 of 2009 was the world's first crossover yacht. The Magellano 50 followed in 2013, the 55S introduced triple Volvo IPS in 2014, the 72 of 2015 was the first Carbon-Tech Generation yacht, Verve 40 opened the walkaround segment in 2016, the S7 and S10 renewed the S Series in 2017 and 2018, the Grande Trideck of 2021 added a 'three decks plus one' configuration, the Seadeck 6 of 2024 set out a more conscious relationship with the sea, and the Grande 44M, presented at Palm Beach in 2024, is the largest yacht the shipyard has ever built.
