Sailing Ratios

Classic yacht-design ratios worked out from the builder's published figures, each shown against the bands designers read it by.

Sail area / displacement

How much sail the boat carries for its weight — its power in light air.

ModestCruiserPerformanceRacing162024
  • not published: sail area
How it is worked out

sail area (ft²) ÷ (displacement as ft³ of seawater)^⅔

Displacement / length

How heavy the boat is for its waterline length. Lower is lighter and quicker; higher is steadier and roomier.

  • 181· Moderate
How it is worked out

displacement (long tons) ÷ (0.01 × waterline length in ft)³

Ballast ratio

The share of the weight carried in the keel — a rough guide to stiffness, though how deep that weight sits matters as much.

LowModerateHigh3040
  • not published: ballast
How it is worked out

ballast ÷ displacement × 100

Comfort ratio

Ted Brewer's measure of how gently a boat moves in a seaway. Higher means a slower, easier motion.

How it is worked out

Capsize screening

A guide from the inquiry after the 1979 Fastnet race: below 2 was taken as suited to ocean passages. It ignores hull shape and where the ballast sits.

Below 22 and above2Oyster 595: 1.72
  • 1.72· Below 2
How it is worked out

beam (ft) ÷ (displacement as ft³ of seawater)^⅓

Hull speed

Roughly the speed a displacement hull reaches before it has to climb its own bow wave.

  • 10.0 kn
How it is worked out

1.34 × √(waterline length in ft), in knots

Most builders publish a light displacement. The ratios were defined on a loaded boat, so every boat here reads a little lighter than a surveyor's figure would — all alike, which keeps them comparable.

Tanks

What the builder publishes about how fast, how strong and how much the boat carries.

Fuel and water on one scale: a tank twice the height holds twice as much.

  • Fuel355 gal
    Water265 gal

33 gal of water per berth

About Oyster Yachts

Premium production

British builder of luxury bluewater deck-saloon sailing yachts, founded in 1973 and led since 2018 by owner Richard Hadida.

Oyster's founder Richard Matthews launched his first cruiser-racer, the UFO 34, designed by Don Pye of Holman & Pye and built by Landamores in Wroxham, in 1973; the first Oyster-branded yacht, the Oyster 35 of 1978, pioneered the deck saloon that has marked every Oyster since, and the range grew through more than fifty models, including the Oyster 80. Early Oysters were racing cruisers whose seaworthiness turned them into bluewater cruisers, and a brokerage for pre-owned Oysters opened in 1984. Rob Humphreys was commissioned to design the Oyster 53 in 1999 and in 2012 drew the first of the sixth-generation G6 hulls -- sleeker, with a wider beam aft -- carried through seven models including the award-winning 565 and 595; Oyster Charter was set up in 2005, and the Oyster World Rally, launched for the fortieth anniversary in 2013 with 28 yachts, sailed again in 2017 and 2022. In 2018 Richard Hadida became the new owner, bringing investment, a new generation of yachts and record orders for the 565 and 595, a team of over 600, and the Oyster 495 built at the Hythe facility near Southampton.
