Sailing Ratios

Classic yacht-design ratios worked out from the builder's published figures, each shown against the bands designers read it by.

Sail area / displacement

How much sail the boat carries for its weight — its power in light air.

Displacement / length

How heavy the boat is for its waterline length. Lower is lighter and quicker; higher is steadier and roomier.

Ballast ratio

The share of the weight carried in the keel — a rough guide to stiffness, though how deep that weight sits matters as much.

Comfort ratio

Ted Brewer's measure of how gently a boat moves in a seaway. Higher means a slower, easier motion.

Hull speed

Roughly the speed a displacement hull reaches before it has to climb its own bow wave.

Most builders publish a light displacement. The ratios were defined on a loaded boat, so every boat here reads a little lighter than a surveyor's figure would — all alike, which keeps them comparable.

Tanks

What the builder publishes about how fast, how strong and how much the boat carries.

Fuel and water on one scale: a tank twice the height holds twice as much.

Design Category

Design limits set by the EU Recreational Craft Directive (2013/53/EU), in significant wave height. A category covers the conditions of those below it. It is the limit the boat was designed to, not a promise that it is safe in any conditions within it — that judgement stays with the skipper.

About Hallberg-Rassy

Premium production

Swedish builder of bluewater cruising sailboats, based in Ellös and formed in 1972, when the Rassy yard took over that of Harry Hallberg (founded in 1943), and still 100% family-owned.

Hallberg-Rassy began as two yards. Harry Hallberg opened his own wooden-boat yard at Kungsviken on the island of Orust in 1943, built the Folkboat and the Kungskryssaren in series, and in 1963 was among the first to build sailing boats in GRP in series -- his P-28, most of its first hundred sold to the USA, was the yard's early export success. Christoph Rassy arrived from Bavaria in 1960, bought the old Hallberg yard at Kungsviken when Hallberg moved to Ellös in the mid-1960s, and in 1966 launched the Rasmus 35, a pioneering long-distance cruiser with a centre cockpit behind a windshield -- the arrangement the yard has kept ever since. When Harry Hallberg retired in 1972 the Rassy yard bought the Ellös premises and the two names merged into Hallberg-Rassy; the first new design under that name, the Monsun 31, became the bestseller with 904 built by 1982. Germán Frers has drawn every model since 1988. The yard is still in Ellös and still family-owned.
