Semi-custom
Family-run Spanish shipyard founded in 1916 by the Astondoa brothers at Portugalete and building since the 1980s at Santa Pola near Alicante — twelve semi-custom motor yachts from the 11.6-metre 377 Coupe to the 60-metre 197 Steel, more than 3,000 vessels in four generations.
The yard dates itself to 1916, when the brothers Jesús and José Astondoa Martínez began building rowing boats and traineras in a small carpenter's workshop in Portugalete. Work stopped during the Spanish Civil War, after which the brothers went separate ways and Jesús turned to fishing and recreational boats; his son Jesús Astondoa Santamaría joined in 1944 and took over the yard soon after, its wooden boats and finish earning it a national name. The third generation joined once the company had established itself on Spain's east coast, and in the early 1980s Astondoa left wood for glass-reinforced polyester. By 2006 the group employed more than 500 people and offered what it describes as the widest range built under one brand, from 40-foot open boats to composite yachts over 120 feet and steel-hulled megayachts up to 45 metres. More than 3,000 vessels have been built in the century since, the family still runs the yard, and the main site at Santa Pola near Alicante spans 30,000 square metres and concentrates on yachts above 122 feet.
