What this builder is

Riviera has been building on Queensland's Gold Coast since 1980, on what the company calls a journey of constant refinement, and from its 16.8-hectare Coomera site at Waterway Drive it handcrafts five luxury motor yacht collections for more than 6,000 owners around the world. The SUV collection — 395, 445, 465, 505, 585 and 645 — pairs a sedan's single-level living with a sports cockpit; the Sport Yacht Platinum Editions run from the 4600 to the 5000, 5600, 6000, 6200 and 6800; the 4300 Sports Express is the open weekender; the Sports Motor Yachts 46, 50, 58, 64, 68 Series II and 72 carry Riviera's signature flybridge and mezzanine cockpit; and the 54 Enclosed Flybridge and the 78 Motor Yacht with its enclosed bridge deck top the range. The smaller collections run on twin Volvo Penta IPS pods with joystick control, the 64 to 78 on twin MAN V8 and V12 shaft drives of up to 2,000 hp each. Every model page prints a metric-first specification: length overall including swim platform and bow sprit, hull length to ISO 8666, beam, maximum draft including propellers, dry weight, fuel, water and holding tanks, sleeping capacity, cockpit and deck areas, bridge clearance and the engine options with kW and hp per engine.

Who sails them

Riviera owners are Australian, American and Asia-Pacific families and offshore anglers who want a blue-water hull with a soft, dry, sure-footed ride, single-level indoor-outdoor living, a barbecue and mezzanine cockpit built for entertaining, and a builder that hosts its owners at its own Festival of Boating and backs them with a global representative network.

Signature models

The Sports Motor Yacht collection — the 46 to the 72 — is Riviera's flagship idea, blending flybridge, sport-fisher cockpit and long-range cruiser; the SUV collection made the brand's name with a new generation of buyers, the 6800 Sport Yacht Platinum Edition heads the sport yachts, and the 78 Motor Yacht is the largest Riviera built.

Strengths

Riviera is known for blue-water hulls tested in Australia's offshore conditions, hand-built construction on one Gold Coast site, Volvo Penta IPS joystick handling on the smaller collections and MAN shaft drives on the larger, CZone digital switching and Sentinel monitoring, indoor-outdoor mezzanine cockpits with barbecues, an owners' festival and events programme, and a fleet of more than 6,000 boats.

Considerations

No speed, range, cabin count or CE category is printed; dry weight is approximate and depends on engines and options; draft is the maximum including propellers; sleeping capacity is given as a range on the 6000, 6200, 68 and 72 (the upper figure is stored); the Belize Sedan and Daybridge models on the same site are a separate brand and were not entered; the sitemap's '-old', 'test-' and duplicate pages were skipped; and the 54 Enclosed Flybridge page still shows photographs named for the 52 it replaced.

History

Riviera launched with a single model, the 38 MKI, in Sydney in 1980, and moved the following year to the Gold Coast in Queensland with a staff of five, building eight boats that year. Through the 1980s a dozen models were designed, built and launched, and the first were exported to the United States and Europe. By the early 1990s three new models had won Modern Boating's Boat of the Year three years running. In 1998, with 280 people on the payroll, construction began on a new facility at Coomera, and many handcrafted models came out of it in the early 2000s, followed by awards and a growing international dealer network. In March 2012 Rodney Longhurst -- a Gold Coast developer, and a qualified builder and joiner by trade -- acquired the company; he is now chairman, and says his aim on buying Riviera was to make it one of the great names in boating. Under Longhurst and chief executive Wes Moxey the collections continue to be refined.
