Brand Overview

Italian builder of 20- to 32-metre flybridge yachts, founded at Monfalcone on the Gulf of Trieste in 2008 within the Beneteau group — ten models in the MCY Collection and the enclosed-flybridge MCY Skylounge Collection, all styled by the Nuvolari Lenard studio and built by a modular process the yard developed itself.

What this builder is

The yard says Monte Carlo Yachts was founded in December 2008 to combine Italian craft, design and taste for beauty with the industrial know-how of the Bénéteau Group, at a shipyard in Monfalcone on the Gulf of Trieste, and that designers Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard were given carte blanche. The first model, the MCY 76, was unveiled in Venice in July 2010; the MCY 65 followed in 2011, the MCY 70 in 2012, the MCY 86 in 2013, the 32-metre MCY 105 flagship in 2015, the MCY 80 in 2016 and the MCY 96 in 2017. A second generation of the MCY 66, 70 and 76 arrived in 2019, and in 2020 the Skylounge range added an enclosed flybridge. The site is published by GBI S.p.A. of Monfalcone. Every MCY is built as three modules — hull, interior module and deck — made in parallel and joined in final assembly; the interior is built in one piece outside the hull on a grid, and all fibreglass parts are vacuum-infused and post-cured, a process the yard says won the 2015 IBI-METS award for innovation in a production process. The current range is the MCY 66, 70, 76, 80, 86, 96 and 105 and the MCY 70, 76 and 105 Skylounge, on twin MAN or MTU engines; each page prints length overall, maximum beam, dry displacement, engine options, maximum and cruising speed, fuel and water, materials, designers and the design category.

Who sails them

MCY owners are buyers of 20- to 32-metre flybridge yachts who want a classic, ship-like profile — high bulwarks, a tall bow and the brand's large hull portholes — with interior volumes the yard compares to larger yachts, and who expect to customise layout and decor; the 96 and 105 are built to RINA rules for private or charter use, and the Skylounge versions suit owners who cruise all year round.

Signature models

The MCY 76, unveiled in Venice in 2010, launched the brand and won Best Design Yacht and Most Innovative Project at Cannes; the 32-metre MCY 105 of 2015, with a raised pilot house and a full-beam master cabin on the main deck, is the flagship and won the 2017 World Superyacht Award in its category.

Strengths

Monte Carlo Yachts is known for one consistent Nuvolari Lenard design language across the range, a modular build in which the interior module is assembled outside the hull, vacuum-infused and post-cured composites with Kevlar and carbon fibre, extensive customisation of layouts and materials, a long list of design awards, and the industrial backing of the Beneteau group.

Considerations

The specification block gives no cabin or head count, black-water tank, range, hull or waterline length; draft is printed only for the 86, 96, 105 and the Skylounge models; displacement is the dry figure; top speeds are 'up to' and often with the uprated engine option; and the 105 and 105 Skylounge are RINA-classed with no CE category shown. Cabin counts are entered only where the layout titles or page text state them.

History

Monte Carlo Yachts says it was founded in December 2008 from the idea of combining the best of Made in Italy — craft tradition, the search for beauty and innovative design — with the industrial know-how of the Bénéteau Group, at a shipyard in Monfalcone on the Gulf of Trieste, and that designers Carlo Nuvolari and Dan Lenard were given carte blanche. The first model, the MCY 76, was unveiled in Venice in July 2010 and won Best Design Yacht and Most Innovative Project at the Cannes World Yachts Trophies that September. The MCY 65, later called the 'mini-mega yacht', followed in Cannes in 2011, the MCY 70 in Trieste in 2012 and the MCY 86 at Cap d'Ail in 2013. In July 2015, the company's fifth anniversary, it returned to Venice to unveil the 32-metre MCY 105; that November its modular construction won the IBI-METS award for innovation in a production process, and by December the yard reported growth from a €3 million first-year turnover to €58 million and from 20 to more than 300 people. The MCY 80 was presented in Trieste in 2016 and the MCY 96 in Venice in 2017, the year the MCY 105 won the World Superyacht Award in its category. A second generation began with the new MCY 70 at boot Düsseldorf in January 2019, followed by the MCY 66 and MCY 76, and in January 2020 the yard announced the Skylounge range with an enclosed flybridge, starting with the MCY 70 Skylounge.
