What this builder is

Garcia Yachts is a French builder specialised in aluminium centerboarder monohulls and, more recently, aluminium expedition catamarans, aimed at blue-water and high-latitude exploration sailing. Part of the Grand Large Yachting group alongside Allures and Outremer, it occupies a distinct niche from mainstream production builders through its metal construction, panoramic pilothouse design and expedition-oriented feature set (double glazing, central heating, watertight doors).

Who sails them

Buyers are typically experienced offshore couples or small families planning long-range, high-latitude or remote-area voyages (Northwest Passage, Patagonia, Antarctica, Svalbard) who want a secure, self-sufficient aluminium boat rather than a coastal cruiser. Many are liveaboard voyagers or long-term expedition sailors rather than weekend or charter customers, and some units are used for guided/charter expedition work.

Signature models

The Exploration 45, developed with Jimmy Cornell for the Northwest Passage, launched the modern Exploration range and remains the volume seller with nearly 60 built; the Exploration 52 and flagship Exploration 60 extended the concept to larger yacht-class cruisers, while the Explocat 52 was Garcia's first aluminium exploration catamaran.

Strengths

Garcia is repeatedly recognised (multiple European Yacht of the Year and Cruising World Boat of the Year awards) for aluminium build robustness, safety/self-sufficiency features, and comfortable, well-thought-out interiors suited to demanding long-distance and high-latitude voyages.

Considerations

As a niche aluminium centerboarder specialist within a small production run, Garcia yachts carry a premium price and long build/wait times compared to mainstream GRP cruisers, and the specialised aluminium construction requires different maintenance knowledge (e.g. corrosion/electrolysis management) than a fiberglass boat.

History

In 1974 two metalworker brothers, Jean-Pierre and Jean-Louis Garcia, founded a shipyard in Normandy and, inspired by Moitessier and Slocum, built some sixty steel boats that made the yard's name on ocean-cruising routes. Aluminium arrived in 1984 with the 36.15 MET, a minimalist 60-footer built with Jean-Luc Van den Heede that took third place in the first Vendée Globe, followed by the Passoa range of 43 to 55 feet and the Nouanni. The 2000s were the one-off years -- Zurbagan, a 90-footer by Vaton and Couedel, won the Super Yacht Design Award in 2006 -- and in 2010 Garcia joined the Grand Large Yachting group. In 2013 the Exploration range was launched with the navigator Jimmy Cornell, whose Exploration 45 made the Northwest Passage in 2015; the concept grew to a catamaran in 2020 and to 60-footers in 2021, and three more Exploration 45s made the Passage in 2024. More than four hundred bluewater cruisers have left the workshops in fifty years.
