Brand Overview

Finnish family builder of all-season walkaround pilothouse boats from Kokkola on the Gulf of Bothnia — fourteen models from the 9.2-metre Sargo 28 to the 14.6-metre Sargo 45 Fly in Sargo, Explorer and Outboard lines, launched in 2014 by the Sarin family that built Minor boats since 1976.

What this builder is

Sargo's story starts with Edy Sarin, who worked on the first Swan 36 at Nautor in 1966 and in 1967 founded Sarins Snickeri, building wooden interiors for Swan yachts; GRP dinghies followed in 1970, the first Minor motorboats in 1976 and the walkaround Minor 700 in 1978. By the yard's count more than 1,900 Minors had been built by 2012, including police boats for German authorities, and in June 2014 the family launched the new SARGO brand, renaming the Minor Offshore 25-36. SARGO Oy Ab is in Kokkola, Ostrobothnia, run by Edy's sons — Thomas Sarin as CEO — and says its boats are 100% hand-built in Finland under its own SARGO Production System, with every boat tested at its year-round sea-water boathouse. The range is fourteen boats: Sargo 28, 31, 33, 36, 36 Fly, 45 and 45 Fly; the same hulls in Explorer trim (28-45 Explorer); and the 28 and 31 Outboard. Every Sargo has a single-level walkaround deck with side doors, a pilothouse with sliding roof hatch and, the yard says, a certified Volvo Penta diesel installation, with bow thruster, power trim, window defrosters and three separate batteries as standard. Each page prints length, beam, draught, dry weight, berths per cabin, the recommended engine power, a top-speed range and the CE category.

Who sails them

Sargo owners are Nordic and northern-European boaters who want to keep going in autumn wind and spring cold — families cruising the archipelagos, islanders commuting to the mainland, and professionals such as police and rescue services — who value a heated pilothouse, a flat walkaround deck with side doors, a hull built for the Gulf of Bothnia and a boat they can partly specify themselves.

Signature models

The Sargo 36 Fly, which the yard calls 'the queen of our range', and the 45 that followed in 2022 are the signature boats; the new 45 Fly, the 'empress', adds a flybridge with a 360° lounge, and the Sargo 31 and 33 carry the walkaround pilothouse concept that grew out of the Minor Offshore.

Strengths

Sargo is known for heavy-duty all-season hulls certified B-Offshore across the range, a single-level deck with wide side doors and handrails, generous standard equipment, Volvo Penta diesel installations, hand building in Finland with sea testing for every boat, use by police and rescue authorities, and more than fifty years of family boatbuilding behind the brand.

Considerations

The technical tables are short — length, beam, draught, dry weight, berths, recommended engine power and a top-speed range; no tanks, heads, cruising speed or range are printed for the smaller boats, and engines are given only as horsepower recommendations (the 45s print '2×480' without a unit); the Explorer versions repeat the standard boats' figures; the 45 and 45 Fly are marked 'preliminary'; the 28 Outboard's engine line is garbled; and a Sargo 32 listed for Boot Düsseldorf has no page yet.

History

The timeline starts in 1966, when Edy Sarin was hired by Pekka Koskenkylä at Nautor and worked on the first Swan 36. In 1967 he founded Sarins Snickeri, making wooden interiors for Swan sailing boats; in 1970 it began building OK dinghies in GRP, adding Snipe and Optimist boats in 1971. The Minor boats were created in 1976 with the Minor 650, and the walkaround Minor 700 followed in 1978; models such as the Minor 800C, 7600, 28 Columbus and 750 came through the 1980s and early 1990s. The first police boats went to the German police in 1993, and by 2004 nineteen boats had been delivered to German authorities. The 1,000th Minor was launched at the Helsinki Yacht Club in 1998; in 2001 Sarins Båtar moved part of its operations to a new industrial facility at Lahdenperä, and the Minor 27 of 2005 was the first model made for a sterndrive. The Minor Offshore 31, 25, 28 and 36 followed between 2007 and 2012, by which time the company had produced more than 1,900 motorboats. On 9 June 2014 Sarins Båtar launched the new brand SARGO, and the Minor Offshore 25-36 changed brand to SARGO. The Sargo 31 was presented at Düsseldorf in 2015, the Sargo 33 at the Finnboat floating show in 2016, the company's own all-weather terminal was completed and Sarins Båtar turned 50 in 2017, the Sargo 31 Aft Door came in 2018, the new Sargo 28 in 2021, and the new Sargo 36 and Sargo 45 in 2022.
