What this builder is

Tony Fleming spent 1961 to 1983 as technical director of American Marine in Hong Kong, largely responsible for the Grand Banks trawlers, before leaving with his partner Anton Emmerton to develop an all-new pilothouse design with naval architect Larry Drake of San Diego; in 1985 they chose the Tung Hwa yard near Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and hull number one of what became the Fleming 55 was begun. Over 100 Fleming 55s had been delivered by 1997, the Fleming 75 followed in 2000 and the 65 in 2005, the 58 in 2013, and the 300th Fleming was built in December 2015; Tony's nephew Adi Shard has worked at the yard since 1998, Duncan Cowie since 2001, and Tony himself cruised his own 65, VENTURE, from Alaska to the Channel Islands. Tung Hwa, still family-owned, now builds Flemings exclusively with nearly 200 craftsmen, about 18 boats a year, and tests each one in its own tank; the company's office is at Costa Mesa, California, with dealers in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Japan. The current range is the Fleming 55, 58/60, 65, 78 and 85, all semi-displacement pilothouse yachts on twin shaft-drive diesels — Cummins in the 55, MAN i6-800 in the 58/60 and 65, MAN V12-1550 in the 78 and 85 — with hulls by Norman R. Wright and Sons on the 58 and 85. Every model page prints a Standard Specifications list: length and length overall including swim step and anchor platform, beam, draft, waterline length, air draft, main engines, transmission, generator, stabilizers, thrusters and fuel, water and black-water tankage, with performance curves for range and fuel consumption as charts.

Who sails them

Fleming owners are experienced long-distance cruising couples — Americans crossing to the Bahamas and up the Inside Passage, Australians and New Zealanders on the Tasman, Europeans on the Atlantic coast — who want a serious pilothouse passagemaker that is stabilised, quiet and engineered to be run by two, and who value proven systems, a dealer network that knows the boats and a yard that has built nothing else for decades.

Signature models

The Fleming 55, approaching its 300th hull, is the boat the company was founded on and still its best seller; the 65 was Tony Fleming's own VENTURE and the platform for his voyages, the 58/60 bridged the gap with a Norman Wright hull, and the 85 is the ocean-crossing flagship.

Strengths

Fleming is known for semi-displacement pilothouse hulls that are dry, stable and efficient, decades of evolutionary refinement on one yard, redundant engineered systems (twin engines, twin generators, hydraulic thrusters, TRAC or Humphree stabilisers, Fleming First Mate monitoring), heavy-duty ground tackle, exceptional resale value and a loyal owners' community with its own magazine, Venturer.

Considerations

No displacement, speed or range is printed (the performance curves are images), and no cabin count; the 58 and 60 share one page and one specification list and are entered as one model; 'Length' excludes the swim step and anchor platform while 'LOA' includes them, and the Fleming 85 prints its LOA a few centimetres below its length; there are no deck plans on the pages; and the Fleming 55 lists Cummins QSC 8.3 500 hp as standard while the larger models list MAN engines only.

History

Tony Fleming was technical director of American Marine in Hong Kong, builder of the Grand Banks trawlers, from 1961 to 1983 and set up its Singapore yard; after leaving in 1983 he and his partner Anton Emmerton developed an all-new pilothouse design with the San Diego naval architect Larry Drake, chose the Tung Hwa yard near Kaohsiung in Taiwan in the summer of 1985, and began hull number one -- 50 feet at first, then the Fleming 53 and 55 from hull nine. By 1997 over a hundred 55s had been delivered, the Fleming 75 was launched in 2000, Tony's nephew Adi Shard joined in 1998 and Duncan Cowie in 2001, and the Fleming 65 of 2005 -- hull one being Tony's own VENTURE -- let him hand daily operations to his team and set off on his 'voyages of personal discovery'; by 2006, 170 55s, twelve 75s and five 65s had been delivered. The 25th anniversary fell in 2011, the 300th Fleming shipped in December 2015, the 78 Classic launched in 2017, a second yard dedicated to the F85 flagship was funded in 2021 with the first F85 launched in 2022, the F60 arrived in 2024, and in 2025 a site for a new factory was bought -- all Flemings still built by Tung Hwa.
