What this builder is

Bestevaer is a Dutch builder of go-anywhere aluminium explorer sailing (and now motor) yachts, designed by naval architect Gerard Dijkstra and built by KM Yachtbuilders in Makkum. It occupies a niche at the high-latitude/expedition-cruising end of the market, distinguished from mainstream production sailboat builders by its rugged aluminium construction, semi-custom and full-custom offerings, and focus on self-sufficient long-distance voyaging.

Who sails them

Typical owners are experienced offshore sailors, often couples or small families, planning long-range or high-latitude voyages (Northwest Passage, Patagonia, Antarctic, Greenland) with short-handed crewing in mind. Boats are usually privately owned and lived aboard for extended world cruising rather than chartered.

Signature models

Bestevaer 55ST Morning Haze, Bestevaer 66ST Anabel, and Bestevaer 36 S/Y are the models that define the range: Morning Haze and Tranquilo established the brand's high-latitude expedition reputation, the 66ST Anabel introduced full self-sufficiency (batteries, solar, wind generators), and the Bestevaer 36 S/Y, winner of a European Yacht of the Year 2024 sustainability mention, is the smallest and most accessible model in the lineup.

Strengths

Bestevaer is repeatedly credited with rugged, seaworthy aluminium construction, proven high-latitude/expedition capability (multiple Northwest Passage and polar crossings), and a distinctive, recognisable pilot-house design combined with strong build quality and after-sales service.

Considerations

As semi-custom to full-custom aluminium explorer yachts, Bestevaers command a premium price versus production GRP cruisers and have longer build times and a narrower range than mainstream builders; buyers trade some interior polish/production-line efficiency for rugged expedition capability.

History

The line began with a naval architect building for himself: Gerard Dijkstra, a polar sailor as well as a designer, drew the Bestevaer II as his own ideal boat -- unrestricted short-handed sailing, safe, comfortable and good-looking -- and brought to it what he had learned racing, designing and sailing in ice. What followed became a family of go-anywhere aluminium yachts built by KM Yachtbuilders. Tranquilo, a 56-footer meant for singlehanding, has sailed the Northwest Passage alone twice, in 2012 and 2017, explored Patagonia and the Antarctic peninsula and wintered ten months in the frozen seas of northern Canada. The first 49-footer, Katharos, came in 2009; Morning Haze, a 55-footer with a lifting keel, left on a world voyage straight from delivery, has been to Greenland three times and crossed the Northwest Passage in 2018; and the 66-foot Anabel was the first able to reach the far corners of the world entirely self-reliantly, on batteries, deck solar and two telescopic wind generators. The semi-custom Pure series, derived from the Bestevaer II and offered at 45, 49 and 53 feet, arrived in 2016, and the 45 was nominated Sailing Yacht of the Year. A 53-foot explorer motor yacht followed in 2020, drawn on the same principles; the 72-foot Symbiose is the largest one-off; and the Bestevaer 36, the smallest and greenest, shallow enough to dry out in the Wadden Sea, won a European Yacht of the Year 2024 special mention for sustainability.
