About Viking Yachts

Semi-custom

New Jersey family builder of semi-custom sportfishing yachts since 1964 — 29 models from the 13.9-metre 46 Billfish to the 27.4-metre 90, in seven styles from open-bridge Convertible to Enclosed Bridge, Sky Bridge, Open Express, Sport Coupe, Sport Tower and Billfish, almost all built in-house at New Gretna and Mullica.

Viking says one family has run it for more than six decades. Bill Healey and his brother Bob founded the company in 1964 after buying Peterson-Viking Builders, a small, struggling New Jersey maker of 37-foot wooden sportfishing boats, and under Bill's mantra to build a better boat every day it has delivered more than 5,500 boats. In the early 1970s came its first fiberglass model, a 33-footer, then the 35 and the 40/41 series, of which more than 600 were sold; Bill's son Patrick, now president and CEO, joined in that decade. The 1980s brought the 45, 47 and 48, and in 1984 Pat Healey started the demonstration programme the yard still relies on. The 1990 recession and a 10 percent federal luxury tax in 1991 cut the workforce from 1,500 to fewer than 80; the Healeys put in their own money, helped lead the campaign that repealed the tax in 1993, and went on to launch the Viking 55, which the yard says set the standard for modern convertibles. The 2000s brought a $10 million plant expansion, the Palm Beach Towers and Atlantic Marine Electronics subsidiaries, a five-axis CNC tooling machine, a service centre in Palm Beach County and larger boats such as the 60, 65, 74 and 82. In the 2010s Viking built the 92 Enclosed Bridge, which it calls the world's largest resin-infused production sportfishing yacht, bought the former Ocean Yachts plant for the Billfish series and Valhalla Boatworks center consoles, and a third generation joined. In 2023 it showed the Viking 90 and Valhalla 55 at Miami, followed by second-generation 82 and 74 convertibles.
