What this builder is

Nimbus was established in Gothenburg in 1968 and still has its head office at Långedrag on the city's coast; it describes its boats as built for the conscious yachtsman who values smart functionality, comfort, safety and Scandinavian design, whether for a quick drive, a social weekend or a long international cruise. Today it is the founding brand of the Nimbus Group alongside Alukin, Aquador, EdgeWater, Falcon and Paragon Yachts. The range runs in families: the outboard-powered Commuter (8, 9, 11), Tender (8, 9, 11) and Weekender (9, 11) day boats and walk-arounds with Mercury Verado power up to twin 425 hp; the new Sport Cruiser line (Sport Tender 35, Sport Tender 42, Sport Weekender 42, Sport Coupé 42) with twin-stepped, air-lubricated hulls in vacuum-infused Divinycell sandwich; the inboard-diesel 305 Coupé and 305 Drophead, the 365 Coupé, the 405 Coupé and 405 Flybridge with twin Volvo Penta D4/D6 shafts; and the 495 Flybridge with Volvo Penta IPS650 pods, joined by the 495 Coupé presented at boot Düsseldorf 2026. The larger models' specifications follow the ISO notation (Lh, Bmax, Ha, Tmax, MLCC, MLDC), the day boats print length, width, weight, air draft, tanks, design category, beds, speed and engine alternatives, and Nimbus also offers E-Power electric versions.

Who sails them

Nimbus owners are Scandinavian and northern-European boaters who use a boat every week rather than once a season: commuters and day-trippers in the 8s and 9s, families and friends on walk-around Tenders and Weekenders, couples on the Coupés with their all-weather wheelhouses, and cruising owners on the 405 and 495 who want three cabins, a flybridge and IPS joystick docking in a boat that still looks Scandinavian.

Signature models

The Coupé is Nimbus's signature — an all-weather wheelhouse boat from the 305 to the 405 and now the 495 — while the Sport Tender 35, the first of the new Sport Cruiser series, and the 495 Flybridge flagship show where the range is heading.

Strengths

Nimbus is known for Scandinavian design and functional layouts, all-weather Coupé wheelhouses, fast twin-stepped Sport hulls, transparent ISO-style specifications with light craft mass and maximum load, a wide choice of Mercury and Volvo Penta engines including E-Power, and the backing of the Nimbus Group.

Considerations

The site uses three specification dialects and mixes decimal commas with comma thousands, weights are light craft or 'with engine' figures rather than a stated displacement, engine power on the 365, 405 and 495 is quoted in kW and ps/hk rather than hp, speeds are '40+' style claims, the Sport Coupé 42 page repeats the Commuter 11's figures, and most of the range is under 12 metres.

History

Nimbus was established at Gothenburg in 1968, and it began with five Nimbus 26s built by a team with no idea they were starting what would become Scandinavia's leading boatbuilder. The Nimbus 800 Turbo of the 1980s was the boat Björn Borg chose, and the joint campaign went well enough that he signed a tennis racket in thanks -- framed at the yard to this day. From 1984, Norwegian owners collected their boats at the head office in Långedrag and sailed home in convoy, 475 nautical miles to Bergen over three days; the tradition lasted fifteen years. In 1996 members of Sweden's royal yacht clubs clubbed together to give the King a Nimbus 19 Nova with a 115-horsepower Evinrude for his fiftieth birthday, and in 1998 Nuccio Bertone's interest produced a limited edition of the Nimbus 26 DC, the 26 DC Epoca, still among the most sought-after boats the yard has made. What it builds is for the boater who values smart function, comfort, safety and Scandinavian design, on a quick run out, a sociable weekend or a long passage abroad.
