What this builder is

Najad is a long-established Swedish yard building solid, traditionally styled bluewater cruising monohulls in the 40-60 foot range, known for heavy displacement hulls, teak joinery, and offshore-capable engineering rather than performance or volume production. It occupies a niche among premium Scandinavian builders alongside brands like Hallberg-Rassy, competing on craftsmanship and long-distance seaworthiness rather than price.

Who sails them

Najad owners are typically experienced cruising couples or small crews planning long offshore passages or full-time liveaboard voyaging, including ocean crossings, rather than day-sailing or racing. The boats are bought for serious bluewater use and long-term ownership rather than charter fleets.

Signature models

The current range centers on the Najad 395 AC, 410 CC, 451 AC/CC, 505 CC, and flagship 570 CC, spanning roughly 40 to 60 feet as the builder's core bluewater cruiser line.

Strengths

Najad is widely credited with exceptional build quality, robust offshore engineering, and finely crafted joinery, giving its yachts strong reputations for durability and resale value.

Considerations

Najad's traditional, heavier-displacement hulls and classic styling trade off some sailing performance and interior modernity compared to lighter, more contemporary production cruisers, and the brand's premium build quality comes at a higher price point with a narrower model range.

History

Najad was founded in 1971 at Henån on Orust, the Swedish island that builds more sailing yachts per square kilometre than anywhere else in the world, with a simple aim: the finest bluewater cruising yacht in Sweden. More than fifty years on, every Najad is still built by hand at Henån, where the joinery, the laminate schedule and the rigging layout are each worked out rather than left to chance. The boats have circumnavigated, crossed the Atlantic many times over, and come back.
