What this builder is

Frauscher's history begins in 1927, when Engelbert Frauscher took over a boat-building shop on the Old Danube in Vienna; after the war he settled in Gmunden, where the family repaired and built rowing boats and O-Jolle dinghies and, by the yard's account, wooden electric boats from 1955. The brothers Ernst and Hans Frauscher turned to polyester in 1971 and merged their companies in 1972, and when motorboats were banned on Lake Traunsee in the late 1970s the electric boat became the heart of the business, built at a new yard in Moosham from 1976 alongside more than 600 H-boats. The yard lists the world's first production hybrid sports boat in 2008 and the first fully certified hydrogen-powered boat in 2009, opened a 3,000 m² shipyard in Ohlsdorf near Gmunden in 2012 and expanded it in 2024; Frauscher Bootswerft GmbH & Co KG is managed by the third generation of the family, with sales centres in Port Adriano, Port Grimaud and Miami. The range is eleven petrol and diesel boats — 747 Mirage, 797 Spectre, 858 Fantom, 1017 GT, 1212 Ghost and 1414 Demon, most with an open Air sister — four electric boats (610 San Remo, 650 Alassio, 740 Mirage and Mirage Air) and the Frauscher x Porsche 790 Spectre and 850 Fantom and Fantom Air with Porsche's electric drive. Each page prints length, beam, engine or motor and battery range, weight, fuel and the CE category with persons.

Who sails them

Frauscher owners are day-boaters who want design and craftsmanship more than berths — on Alpine lakes such as the Traunsee, Lake Garda and Lake Starnberg, where electric power is often the rule, and in harbours such as Port Adriano, Port Grimaud and Miami where the yard has its own sales centres — and who increasingly choose the electric and Porsche models over petrol.

Signature models

The 1017 GT, introduced in 2011 and sold more than 100 times by the yard's count, is the gentleman's racer at the core of the brand; the 650 Alassio, which the yard calls Europe's best-selling electric boat with more than 200 sold, carries the electric tradition, and the Frauscher x Porsche 850 Fantom Air, electric Powerboat of the Year 2025, joins the two.

Strengths

Frauscher is known for a distinctive design language — flat bow with a vertical stem, frameless tinted windscreen, carbon air intakes, teak decks — boats painted in eleven layers in its own paint shop, more than seventy years of series-built electric boats that now make up around 40% of what it sells, closed-bow and open Air versions of most hulls, family ownership since 1927, and the Frauscher x Porsche electric collaboration.

Considerations

These are day cruisers and sports boats: only the 1414 pair sleeps four and the 1017 GT has a cabin for two; weights are 'from' figures for the lightest configuration; the specification row gives engine power as a range and no speeds (the 1017 GT's 'up to 60 knots' comes from the text), the electric boats print motor power in kW and battery capacity in kWh with range shown only as a graphic, the Porsche models are documented on a separate site that quotes top speed in km/h, and no layout drawings are published.

History

Engelbert Frauscher, born in 1903 in Aspach in Upper Austria's Innviertel, trained as a carpenter and boatbuilder and in 1927 took over a boat-building shop on the Old Danube in Vienna, where he built rowing and sailing boats, including two Olympia-Jolle dinghies for the Austrian team at the 1936 Olympics. The Vienna shop was badly damaged in an air raid in 1944; after the war he serviced the yacht club's boats for the American forces in Gmunden and then bought the Weyer shipyard there, where the family repaired boats, ran a boat rental, built O-Jolle and Zugvogel boats and the first wooden electric boats, followed by the motorboats Fish and Starfish once his sons Ernst and Hans had joined. Hans Frauscher began building in polyester in 1971, the brothers merged their firms in 1972, and when motorboats were banned on Lake Traunsee in the late 1970s the electric boat took over, with several hundred leaving the new yard at Moosham from 1976; the H-boat licence of 1979 brought more than 600 boats and four world titles. The third generation joined from 1982, Frauscher Bootswerft GmbH & Co KG was formed in 1993, and after a fire in 2001 destroyed the boathouse and 60 boats a new one was built in 2002. The 717 GT was Powerboat of the Year in 2010, a modern shipyard opened in Ohlsdorf in 2012 together with a sales base at Port Adriano in Mallorca, the 1414 Demon of 2016 took the yard from the lake to the sea, and Port Grimaud followed in 2019.
